It wont hurt anything, but training for boxing isnt going to help you when you get jumped by 11 dudes or when I someone bites a chunk out of your face.
The Advantages of Boxing over Street Fighting?

being a Marine boxing will do you good also learn ground fighting and learn how to use a gun in the real world haveing a gun is a must end threadI've always been a fan of boxing, and though I've sorely wanted to, I've never had the opportunity to train in the disciplines of boxing. I grew up in Kansas City, MO, one of the worst cities in the nation in terms of recorded violent crimes. As such, I stayed in areas plagued with violence, whether it be gang or otherwise. Though I've never been "weak", or a "*****", I've never learned how to properly defend myself.
With that said, I'm now 18, and I've since commuted to Dallas. I'm an African American male, about 5'7, 145 lbs. I've found a local gym, and I'm interested in taking classes. My question is, are taking classes actually worth it? Will learning the art of boxing be an effective way of not only getting in shape, but teaching me how to properly defend myself? Also, am I too old to get into boxing now, and or should I pursue another discipline, along the lines of a martial art? And as the title says, what are the advantages of knowing how to box when in a street fight.
Any feedback would be appreciated.
Here's a link to the gym.

Let me clear up my intentions. I'm looking to train in some type of discipline whether it be boxing, or a martial art, for self defense. I'm not running out here trying to be a super hero or anything, and I'm not trying to start any fights, but you never know, that's why I asked the street fighting questions.
With that said, do training in Martial Arts help you get in shape?Last edited by Hannibal Barca; 04-13-2010, 01:29 PM.Comment

sheesh, dont take any notice to this ****** and dangerous post.
The answer is yes becoming a member of the gym will help you in a street fight! 75% of the time in a street fight fists are being used! ive had several street fights and bar brawls since i boxed, tho I do think you need to have a little more courage to street fight as apposed to boxing, it helps big time when you get into a street fight when you develop the fitness, awareness, movement and general ability to throw short sharp powerful punches that a street brawler doesnt have. I always throw in a head butt at any opportinity which ends the fight if connects right.
with that said boxing, you will learn is about disipline and in time you wont need to street fight or very little, cos people will start looking at you in a different light and respecting you having the courage to get into the ring. tho it'll take time. its a great way to get off the street and away from the bad s**t that comes with it!!!Comment

I really appreciate all of the responses. It's nice to have boxing discussions without all the mess some of the other discussions NSB are filled with.Comment

I dont agree with u saying that boxing is not effective against multiple attackers. Boxing is the most effective way of beating several attackers esp if u have 1 punch KO power.Any type of training is better than nothing. More specifically though there are 2 advantages of boxing over street fighting:
1)Conditioning = even the average person who is in decent shape will gas after throwing a couple of combinations
2)Muscle memory = the average person would wind up their punches from a mile away and swing for the fences. having training would allow you to react with proper form on instinct without thought process.
There are 2 giant disadvantages of boxing over street fighting however:
1)Boxing by concept is 1on1 = Hardly ever will a street fight be so simple as mono y mono. It will not teach you how to defend yourself against multiple attackers as several martial arts would
2)In a streetfight anything goes = On the streets almost anything can be used as a weapon. Martial arts training would give you the muscle memory to react on instinct for the unexpected. everything from your opponent throwing dirt at your eyes, sense someone trying to jump you from behind, someone pulling a knife or weapon on you.
So it truly depends on the goal you have set for yourself personally and are trying to accomplish.
i will never advise someone to use kicks against multiple attackers coz it will prevent u from dodging and moving away from the attacks.
I have been in street fights, myself, and I can attest that punching is ur most effective skill.Comment
