  • Jack loew: The longer this fight goes, the worse it will be for martinez

    By G. Leon

GL: How has everything gone in preparation for Kelly's most significant middleweight fight since he won the title from Jermain Taylor? "This is probably the best Kelly has come into camp, so it probably made it the best camp we've had. He's strong, he's healthy and everything he's done, he's done right for this fight. I expect the best Kelly Pavlik and there's no excuses Saturday night.

GL: What does Kelly at his best mean for Sergio Martinez?

Jack Loew: "It means we stop him late in the fight, like eight or nine."

GL: What did you think of Martinez's performance against Williams?

JL: "I think it was great on his part and I think he won the fight. I think it exposed Paul Williams for what he really was and the monster everybody thinks he is."

GL: Kelly has a dynamite right hand, but some people feel he needs to be set to deliver it and Martinez is a mover, does that concern you at all?

JL: "No, I'm glad everybody thinks like that. Nobody thought like that until after the Bernard Hopkins fight. Everybody goes back to the Bernard Hopkins fight and that's great, if Sergio thinks that he's going to see a robot in there on Saturday night, then he's got another thing coming."

GL: What will be the biggest difference in this fight that leads to Kelly getting his hand raised?

JL: "The natural size and strength. I think Sergio has one shot, and that's early in the fight. The longer this fight goes the worse it's going to be for Martinez."

    GL: Closing thoughts?

JL: "Come out or tune in on Saturday night, it's going to be a great fight and people could expect to see the best in Kelly Pavlik. I think 2010 is going to be our year."

I have nowhere near 50K to bet or I'd gladly take that deal.

Not trying to be a ****, but you might as well go for a serious bet on a big title fight like that. My halfass 5K ain't much.

But as far as the fight goes, I don't think Kelly has game to match Martinez. He's stronger than he looks and has the movement to make Kelly dizzy. Hopkins shut him down with footwork and Taylor looked good in spots of the rematch where he stuck and moved. Sergio's pop was surprisingly good vs Williams at 160, who I think has a better chin than Kelly does. I think the MW crown is Sergio's for the taking.

This is a statement fight for Pavlik, and Jack Loew is right. Pavlik has the type of Power that wears you down over the course of a fight, and I see Pavliks body attack taking its toll on Martinez in the later rounds.

Also outside of the obvious (circling the wrong way, having his hands down, and mental lapses) I feel that another problem Martinez has is getting out of his element and engaging when he doesn't have to. Pavlik with land that right and instead of sticking and moving, Martinez will try to engage. That will be the beginning of the end for him, and I see a late stoppage by Pavlik.

BTW Pavlik could show up looking like complete **** and get UD, but if the Pavlik of old shows up.....Martinez is in a lot of trouble.

                    Fair enough.

I don't think Sergio has the power to really rock Pavlik like Taylor did.

I think Martinez has 3 or 4 really good rounds and starts to wear down.

He never been hit by a big MW before.

You can't compare Kelly to Cintron or Williams.

Kelly does some heavy body punching early and takes him out late with a uppercut.
