Don't know, but the amateurs is kind of bull****. Fighters change completely after it when they turn pro. So, I would take anything that happens between two fighters in the amateurs with a grain of salt.

although there is a change from amateur to profecional, some say the outcome of those fights if they existed apart is curious

They probaby sparred a lot since they were on the US team and near similar classes. One of them fought the class below though. I think it was Dirrell.

who honestly cares? amateur boxing has no bearing on professional boxing. you wear headgear and win based on how many times you tap the other guy. it's not even boxing. it's fencing.

They actually both spent their amateur careers at the same weight (middleweight which is 165lbs in amateurs)

Since both guys couldn't make the team at the same weight Ward moved up to Light Heavyweight (178 pounds) so that Dirrell could stay in his comfortable weight class.

They sparred many times but never fought competitively as far as I know.

Load of BS. The headgear does prevent cuts, but does relatively little in way of stopping impact. Also, "taps" would not be scored. A scoring shot needs to have bodyweight behind it, and it is usually clean powershots that are scored.

It isn't as dangerous as pro boxing, but it is still legitimate boxing, still a very tough sport.

Also what most people on here don't realise is that top line amateurs are already better fighters than 85-90% of pros. Of course they still need to adapt their training and styles to have real success as pros though, because that top 10-15% of pros will be able to hang with them and then take them out over the course of the fight.

On the topic, they probably sparred quite a bit on the US olympic team, and I would have thought they would have fought at some point.
