A few months back on ESPN, Teddy Atlas opined that WBO 140 pound champion Timothy Bradley is the third best pound for pound fighter in the world right after Manny Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather. Unfortunately for Bradley, his commercial appeal hasn’t quite caught up with his status as one of the best fighters in the world. As a result countless fighters from lightweight to welterweight have reportedly turned down fights with Bradley because they don’t feel like the reward (payday)is worth the risk. And according to Bradley as well as his promotional team, Zab Judah, Edwin Valero, Amir Khan, Marcos Maidana, and Victor Ortiz have all turned down fights with Bradley.
As a result, Bradley 25-0 (11) is going to move up and fight at welterweight in June against the dangerous yet unheralded Luis Abregu 29-0 (23) in his HBO debut. Because Bradley’s team had such a hard time securing him an opponent, Bradley’co-promoter,Thompson Boxing’s general manager, Alex Camponovo, thinks that Bradley has replaced Paul Williams as the most avoided man in boxing and said that they would love to fight Manny Pacquiao and commented, ”I would sign on the dotted line without even looking at the contract. That’s a fight, and I’m speaking on behalf of Timothy I know he wants. We’ve been together for a long long time and was fortunate to help him through the ranks and see him progress. I know he wants a big fight, he is deserving of a big fight, his name is becoming bigger and bigger. They talk about Paul Williams being the most feared man in boxing well that’s changed a bit because Timothy cleaned out the division against a lot of guys people didn’t want to fight. He proved himself and showed against Lamont Peterson that he’s really a guy everybody has to watch out for. If we have the opportunity to fight Pacquiao down the line, if we have the opportunity with Mayweather, even Shane Mosley, anybody out there and I know Timothy, if I tell him if he has to fight King Kong tomorrow he’ll just ask me for gloves and he’s in. I don’t see a problem with any of those guys.”
In the interview that took place on Tuesday’s edition of Fight-Fan-Nation-Radio, Camponovo said that Freddie Roach even thinks that a fight with Bradley is just too risky of proposition at this stage of his career and Camponovo stated, “I talked to Freddie Roach a while back ago about the possibility of doing Amir Khan and Timothy or Pacquiao and he told me literally, ‘What for? Your kid is too good, that’s a fight we can do down the line,’ so they know of him and I’m not going to say they are avoiding him, but it probably has to make a little more sense economically and there will be a time when we are going to see showdown between Timothy and one of those guys.”
