INTERVIEW by Shaun Brown
PACQUIAO: On Williams' hit-list
AHEAD of his May 8 clash with Kermit Cintron, Paul "The Punisher" Williams is adamant that the boxing world still hasnt seen his optimum performance level and this will only become apparent when he fights a better standard of opponent. You aint seen the best of Paul Williams, he declared. The best of Paul Williams will happen when the best step up and fight me. My skill level will then rise and can go as high as I decide it will. Its gotta be somebody that brings it out of me.
So regardless of whether we think Cintron is a step up or down from Martinez, 2010 must surely bring an A-lister out to play with Williams. But is his tag of most feared man in boxing a hindrance?
I smile and frown at that tag, Paul mused. It gives the fans something to talk about and its a big compliment but financially its killing me. Other guys fight guys they can just slap around and make their money. Its a slap in the face to me.
Realistically a big fight at welterweight may never happen so light-middleweight and middleweight have to be looked upon as long term homes for Williams.
Im comfortable at 147lbs but the fights havent happened for me, Williams added. I know Ive got the abilities to go up to 168lbs but the money has to be right and I have to feel comfortable at the weight. I know my time will come. When these top guys do fight me they know Im gonna get to them sooner or later over the distance. [Floyd] Mayweather, Pac [Manny Pacquiao], [Shane] Mosley, [Kelly] Pavlik, they all know Im here. They all know I want them at the jump of a dime. I'll go from 147lbs to 160lbs to fight all these top guys and they know it too.
No matter what lies ahead in the future of Paul Williams the volume of punches he throws and come-forward style mean that whoever will fight him has a hard nights work in front of them. Every man out there has a different style that presents its own challenges, he pondered. But I have that will to win that I feel is greater than the other guys. To beat me theyre gonna have to go that extra mile. I look at my opponent and I go after him. No-one is better than the other. But I still go out there to have fun and put on a good show.
A great performance against Cintron next month will not convince the sports big players to enter the ring with Williams. What will is for his team to lower their demands. Only then will boxing fans around the world finally find out if he really belongs in the higher echelons of the sport.
