From what I've always understood, sports training in Cuba is very regimented. The coaches approach training very systematically. From the time these Cuban athletes are just kids, they're led through their paces very carefully. When some of these athletes make it to a free country, they sometimes struggle to find the drive to continue training as they once did. They no longer have state-sponsored coaches to hold their hands. Mix in the new and exciting freedom and financial resources they gain once in another country, and you have a real challenge to stay focused.
