Should there be an age limit on boxing, for arguments sake, 40 years old?
I’m getting tired of seeing legends go on too long, and whilst sometimes there are exceptions to the rules (Hopkins for example – though he was awful on Sat) I really think something needs to be done here.
Some fighters can’t cope with the proposition of retirement, they keep going because boxing is all they know, but in doing so they damage their reputations, and more importantly risk severely damaging their health.
I can’t say I’m happy with licences being granted dependable upon States, or the country the fight is staged – just look at the venues for Holyfields last few fights, and indeed his fight this week coming.
It saddens me so see so many wonderful careers dwindle into such a mess. Countries allowing fights to take place based on nothing more than self exposure and money. They should be ashamed.
Something needs to be done. Perhaps 40 is too young, that’s not for me to say, but it can’t go on the way it is, just look at the Hopkins / Jones rematch, it was dire, embarrassing, and really, it should never have happened, a combined age of 86 was in the ring on Sat night.
Some sensibility needs to be brought into boxing, based on the RIGHT decision, not just a choice that makes the most money.
