Comments Thread For: Haye-Ruiz: If You Deny It, They Will Demand It

By Jake Donovan - Be careful what you wish for, because you just might get it.

Or in the case of fights like David Haye’s alphabet heavyweight title defense against John Ruiz in Manchester, England on Saturday, you just won’t get it.

For years, boxing fans – and several in the media – have been less than discreet in masking their contempt for Ruiz’ punch-and-clinch style, longing for the day when they’d never again have to worry about the only Hispanic heavyweight titlist in boxing history gracing their television screens. Didn't know this fight was in demand, I haven't heard of anyone saying they actually wanted to see it. Although Haye is considered entertainment as far as the heavyweight division is concerned, this fight is right where it belongs, on internet streams. When Haye decides to fight someone of note then i'd be happy to see the fight on tv.

Haye is entertainment in the heavyweight division???? His fight with Valuev was worse than ANY Wlad fight I've ever seen by 100. At least Wlad throws punches in his fights.

I don't know... the biggest question of the week seemed to be whether or not the fight would air via free preview prior to Hopkins/Jones II.

There was similar inquiries (to the point of complaining) when Valuev-Ruiz II of all fights wasn't made available in the states and Sauerland made it difficult to track down online.

I just always get a kick out of fans who claim they don't care about a fight, yet go to great lengths to track down a grainy 4th party stream that cuts out every other round just for the sake of saying they watched it live.

I think by "dont care" we usually mean "dont care enough to buy", if that fight is for free on saturday afternoon, with nothing much to do otherwise, then yeah, we are boxing fans after all and will go great lengths to get that fight on our computers.

I can't deny many of these unnecessary PPV's interest me enough to try and get a stream, though not enough to attempt to pay. It's not that I'm not willing to give my income to the sport, when I feel its deserved, but we've all had the discussion recently over unnecessary PPV's killing the sport's mainstream momentum. Making fights less accessible to the general public, by making obscure fighters available to be watched if paid for, does the opposite of what boxing needs.

In the case of Hopkins-Jones II, these are both names people know. It might not have garnered huge attention, but I wonder where the interest level would be if they made this a free fight. We have to miss the days of boxing on network cable.

I cringe at the idea of Hopkins-Haye. I consider myself a fan of Bernard. I like to watch him, I find his late-career success a perfect story-line for the sport's world, and its pretty special how he's managed to perform into his mid 40's.

That's it though- he's in his mid forties. Step back. Let that sink in. Do we really want to throw him in the ring with someone like David Haye? Now, sure, I admit he's looked good recently and I like him, but we all know a fighter does come with an expiration date. At some point ,when you get to around the age Hopkins is at, you watch your body revolt and lose the physical tools to be what you were. Quite simply, your career is ended for you by Mother Nature.

That's a part of aging and the cycle of life. Bernard might be a great example of a man fighting that bitter cycle, but he's not a god; sorry to admit it. He will get slower, he will lose endurance, he will be more affected by the punches he's been able to stand his entire career.

I really feel like we've watched Roy, a fighter most clearly from Hopkins generation, hit his expiration date a little before Bernard. Now they're fighting and I think we'll see a slightly fresher Hopkins win a comfortable decision and give his aging comrade a nice payday and a final career fight finished on his feet.

Past that, I can't say I have much I want to see Bernard do. I know boxers feel the need to keep plying their trade, but he's only getting older and I really don't want his fairytale career story ruined by watching him smacked around by a younger, faster, stronger, man. It will happen eventually if he keeps fighting. Will he look good in that last defeat, fighting through his age to lose a close decision, walk away with some pride? Maybe. Will he get knocked into the title of 'Old Man' with a harsh KO? It could happen.

Fact of the matter is I see no reason to put a 45 year old man in the ring with David Haye (should he win tonight) for any reason other than marketing. Hopkins last 2 would have been a post-KO, old Roy Jones and a journeymen in Ornelas. We know David is fast and can punch decently and that's the two things an old guy like B-Hop should most avoid.

End the tour, Bernard. Get off the bus and watch some highlights with us. We'll see you around at the Goldenboy fights, right? That's good enough. Relegate yourself to ringside and get out of the ring- soon! I think father-time is going to be at your fight tonight and to say he has a vested interest in the proceedings is putting it lightly.
