Hopkins and Jones Lack Star Power; Sparse Crowd Attends Weigh In

HOPKINS AND JONES LACK STAR POWER; SPARSE CROWD ATTENDS WEIGH-IN
    By Ben Thompson | April 02, 2010

If Bernard Hopkins, Roy Jones Jr. and Golden Boy Promotions were hoping to cash in on tomorrow night's pay-per-view event, they better think again. At today's weigh-in, which was open to the public, roughly 300 fans showed up to see the two future Hall of Famers make weight prior to their long-overdue rematch. "233! I counted them," is what one eyewitness in attendance informed us. Even the media seems less than eager to see the two elder fighters settle their 17-year rivalry, as reportedly only 20 members of the press attended the event. Eventually, a few more fans trickled in from the streets, but hardly the type of crowd befitting a fight between two legends of the sport.

Regardless, with both men making the 175-pound limit, the show will go on and at a suggested retail price of $49.95, both Hopkins and Jones are crossing their fingers, hoping and praying that somebody, anybody will purchase the event. For those fans who aren't willing to part with that kind of money for a fight that only holds any meaning for Hopkins, you can also visit a local movie theater, plunk down $20 and check out all the action. Of course, as usual, FightHype.com will also be offering live round-by-round coverage if you prefer to follow the action from your computer.

Honestly, both fighters deserve this fight to blow up in their faces. I am so sick of these guys thinking they can coast for years and only when they have nothing left, they give the fans the fight that they wanted years ago. Here's a hint, fight the top guys and fight them in exciting fashion, then you won't have a problem in the end. BHOP and Roy, two of the biggest idiots in the sport. These two guys have slapped the fans in the face for far to long. This is a fight that if you are a fan of the sport you would boycott. We can't have this **** in the sport any longer.

You make valid points man Roy frustrated me for years, then when he was washed up started fighting the top class again why what for to rebuild a tarnished legacy,as for hopkins he did not fight in the most dominate era of mws but he beat the top dogs so you have to give him credit for that.

I give Hop credit but I will not cut him any slack with this fight. Hopkins should be fighting one of the top guys, not RJJ. They should of fought years ago and for them to think that all of sudden they can spin this into a big fight even though it's simply a cash grab, is a slap in the fans face. I can no longer respect either guy as a fighter and I actually question if they ever cared about the sport itself or just lining their pockets over the years. This fight is unacceptable and kills the creditability of the sport, and is one of the major reason boxing has been declining over the decades.

I agree that this fight is way past wanted but at this point i just want to see both go out like legends they are and hopefully some fireworks happen tonight.

even if they were the best during their time, that was then. This is now. Two 40+ years old fighters, whose last few fights were not really that great which shows their diminishing skills, now squaring off, still believing they are in their 30's to justify a 49.95 ppv.

50 bucks?? who the hell are they fooling. This should have been on HBO and it would have raked in good ratings. SMFH at GBP. I feel bad for both of them.
