Patience is a good thing for a fighter like Delvin Rodriguez. A fighter. He has long been a fighter whose offense is his offense and whose defense is his offense. A fighter can prolong his career if he learns to be – in part, at least – a boxer.
Patience is a bad thing for a boxer like Mike Arnaoutis. A boxer. Three years ago against Kendall Holt, he waited to counterpunch. And waited. And waited. And lost.
On Friday night (and on ESPN2's "Friday Night Fights," live from the Mohegan Sun), Rodriguez worked behind a jab, keeping Arnaoutis at bay, using his left to set up his powerful right. A boxer can still be a puncher.
Arnaoutis, meanwhile, threw good shots but never threw enough. A boxer still needs to punch.
Rodriguez won by a wide unanimous decision, 117-110, 119-108 and 118-109. BoxingScene.com scored the bout 117-110 for Rodriguez.
Rodriguez has been best known for swapping leather, for wide, slower punches, for entertaining battles and knockouts.
