Comments Thread For: Bernard Hopkins: Taking the Riskiest Fight of All

By Cliff Rold - If the consensus choice for best Light Heavyweight in the world, Chad Dawson, beat the living hell out of Bernard Hopkins (50-5-1, 32 KO), if he busted the Executioner up, made him bleed, sent him to the deck…

    …Hopkins would be home free.

If Tomasz Adamek, lured to stay at Cruiserweight, had proved too strong and sent Bernard Hopkins into retirement short of a third World title…

…a collective shrug would have been generated.

The shrug, the home free, might not have come the night of those hypothetical contests. The visceral impact of those evenings would have lingered. It wouldn’t have taken long though for perspective to set in. In his mid-40s, Hopkins would have gotten what he has earned had younger, naturally a little big bigger men defeated him. This is a terrible fight for boxing. I lose all the respect I had for BHop. If he doesn't knock Jones out before 5 he should be taken off the p4p list. HE PROBABLY SHOULD BE TAKEN OFF THE P4P LIST JUST FOR FIGHTING SUCH A TERRIBLY SHOT FIGHTER.

Hopkins is really in a lose lose situation:
If he wins, no one will care
If he wins a competitive fight with a shot Jones, his rep will be tarnished
If he loses, then he is finished

Forget both mens accomplishments, prime for prime Roy Jones beats B-Hop every time. As good as Hopkins is, there's just no way he could ever beat a prime Roy Jones and that's all that matters when comparing the two imo so this fight means nothing.

Prime for prime, I'd favor B-Hop. B-Hop's greatest skill is nullifying your greatest skill. Hopkins would curb Jones' speed and make him fight his fight.

I wish this fight had happened 7-8 years ago

I agree completely. From 88-03 Jones beats Hop every time. Who cares once Jones looses his speed and agility that Hop can beat him now. Obviously.
