No way, I think the only contender at the time was Dawson, but Dawson was way to green, Calzaghe was far to experienced.

Calzaghe has the skills and the staying power.

Uh, perhaps 'cause by the time Gerald McClellan suffered that terrible incident Joe Calzaghe had only fought 10 times and was no where near that level? I mean, one fight before McClellan's retirement he was fighting Julian Jackson (49-2) for the WBC Middleweight belt....Joe Calzaghe was fighting his 5th pro fight against Darren Littlewood (1-1). That might have something to do with why their paths never crossed.
