JOELO TORRES RETURNS TO BROADWAY TONIGHT
    By Socrates Palmer Jr

Undefeated lightweight Joel “Joelo” Torres takes center stage tonight as the headliner in the latest installment of DiBella Entertainments Broadway Boxing series. BB King Blues Club in the heart of Times Square is where Torres hopes to improve on his 11-0-1 and 7 knockout record. Torres meets journeyman veteran Leo Martinez of Chicago, Illinois, 14-12, 6 KO’s, in an eight round contest. Torres a native and resident of Guaynabo, Puerto Rico has made the Big Apple his second home, and it will be the 5th time for him fighting in New York City.

“I feel really blessed to fight in New York again, I love it here you know if it wasn’t for the cold weather I’d probably live here. Fighting in New York is special because of the history and New York is a fight town. I also like the fans if they don’t like what they see in the ring they’ll let you know fast. They like boxers to come out and fight and that’s what I like to do bring it to my opponents and put on a good show for the people who bought their tickets,” Torres.

Torres, lone blemish came in 2008 when he faced the very tough Chris Fernandez. Very questionable scorecard’s by New York judges Luis Rivera and John Signorile lead to a majority draw. However since then and coping with a hand injury from that same fight, he has been on a roll recording consecutive 1st round knockouts in his last two fights.

Torres who comes from a humble background says he’s completely satisfied at the pace his career is heading. The 25 year old hails from the same hometown as current WBO flyweight champion Ivan Calderon. Torres is aware of the tradition he carries into the ring of being a Puerto Rican fighter. In Puerto Rico unlike in many other countries boxing is still the undisputed number one sport. Torres’ manager Ricardo Figueroa, president of Real Fighters management, says that his man has all the tools to be that next great one from island, which has produced more champions per capita than any other region in the world.

“We’re ripped and ready and just confident, this guy is an experience fighter and he’s tough he’s only been stopped twice in 26 fights so he’s very durable. He’s got a win over former world champ Erick Aiken, he’s no slouch. We studied him he’s in your face and we’re going to work cautiously and pick him apart if the openings are there then Joelo is going to go to take him out but we’re ready to go a solid 8 rounds if needed,” Figueroa.

Pending on Torres victory he is scheduled to be a part of the Puaulie Malignaggi versus Amir Khan under card slated for May 15TH at Madison Square Garden’s WAMU Theatre. A special note about tonight’s seven card bout lineup is a special homage to one of the sports true legends. Boxing historian and Puerto Rican journalist Mario Rivera Martino who has affectionately been called the “Bible of Boxing” will be presented with a plaque by Lou DiBella. Martino has covered boxing for nearly a half a century and during the evening’s intermission will receive an award for his remarkable career covering the sweet science.
