by David P. Greisman - Moment No. 1: It is late in the fight. Arthur Abraham lands a right hand, knocking his opponent, an American who earned bronze at the Olympics, into unconsciousness.

Moment No. 2: It is late in the fight. Arthur Abraham lands a right hand, knocking his opponent, an American who earned bronze at the Olympics, into unconsciousness.

A knockout lasts somewhere between 10 seconds and the time at which consciousness is regained. The consequences depend on the circumstances.

Moment No. 1 gave Arthur Abraham a win over Jermain Taylor, installing Abraham atop the standings of the “Super Six” super middleweight tournament and making him an early favorite to win it all. It sent Taylor out of the competition and sent a message to the rest of the contestants: Abraham carried his one-punch power up to 168, and he holds onto it late.

Moment No. 2 gave Abraham a disqualification loss to Andre Dirrell, the first blemish on his ledger. Dirrell had slipped on a wet spot in a corner of the ring and was on his knees when Abraham slugged him. The foul merely expedited the coming conclusion: Dirrell as the winner, and a tournament that is suddenly wide open. [Click Here To Read More]

        What the hell?

What fight were all these people watching? One where Dirrell didn't get knocked down in round 10 (even though the ref waved it off)? One where Dirrell wasn't getting his head snapped back by punches in the 2 rounds preceeding the DQ? Dirrell had an insurmountable points lead, but with 5 minutes on the clock the victory was far from assured. I am continually flabbergasted by the wildly varying conclusions people are able to come to in boxing.

Charlie, this is from later on:

"While Abraham was coming back late and had hurt Dirrell, the punch that got him disqualified means we will never know whether Abraham could have pulled it off or if his efforts came too late."

Still, this isn't like Librado Andrade beating Lucian Bute from pillar to post in the 12th round. Abraham landed some good, hard shots that had Dirrell retreating. But was he close to stopping him? Only in the split second after Abraham decided to throw that illegal blow.

You're right, though, I could've phrased the first mention better.

I thought this writer posed some good questions about the future of the Super 6 tournament... and the answer is no one really knows. Who knows how Dirrell will be affected by what happened. Allan Green is an unknown factor at this time. Abraham could come back and fight well against say Froch or Kessler but do just as bad against Ward as he did Dirrell. This tournament IMO just further shows that styles make fights. Still, I can't wait to see who the final 2 are at the finals.

I liked the parallel between Abraham's 2 ''moments''.

Maybe AA could have won. But the likely scenario was Dirrell running for the last 5 minutes, holding when necessary, and then get a well earned decision. As the writer stated, Dirrell wasn't hurt before he got ko'ed while he was down.

The tournament, I believe, surpasses all expectations up to this point when it comes down to drama and upsets (technical decision due to 2 headbutts, Taylor getting ko'ed in the last seconds of his fight 2 times in a row, controversial split decision in favor of Froch, and now the DQ of AA). I think it shows how bad each participant wants to win the whole thing.

There may be other upsets to come... Allan Green's punching power vs Ward sometimes reckless offense might make some sparks... Froch beating Kessler would be a much bigger upset to me than Green beating Ward.

I want to see more of those tournaments in the future in other talent packed divisions like Jr welter. But first, let's enjoy this one, as many more surprises may come our way.
