In the Super Six contract, it states the referees should be from neutral countries.
However, for Ward-Kessler and Dirrell-Abraham, the refs have been from the US (in the case of Jack Reiss, from Ward's home town of Oakland).
Last night's referee Laurence Cole has been suspended in the past for favoring the home fighter.
A referee can change the momentum of a fight and frustrate a fighter, for example by stopping the action when one fighter has another pinned against the ropes, or by not counting a legit knockdown. Cole did both last night.
Both Cole and Reiss allowed the home fighter to foul (headbutt, low blow) without even a warning.
Don't get me wrong, I'm fully aware that refs in all countries can be biased and sometimes even crooked. In the Bakhtov-Kretschmann fight yesterday, the German ref did all he could to help Kretschmann win.
But why do the American boxers in the Super Six need help from home referees? Why couldn't they abide by the terms of the Super Six contract? Froch didn't have a UK ref, and Abraham didn't have a German ref in their opening fights.
