Just watched the fight, holy ****!!
Was going into it half expecting Dirrel to get a boring as hell UD but wanted to see AA brutally KO Dirrel. Hadnt seen much of Dirrel before this, but what i saw, i didnt like. Duing the Froch fight i wanted to take a bat to his legs to stop him from running away the whole fight. I wanted him to get put out of the tourny. I was a bit of a fan of AA, thought he was a classy boxer with great power and picked him to win the super 6.
Then Dirrel v AA happens.
Direl did what i hoped he would do (but didnt expect) and trusted his own ability more. He showed the difference between boxing and running last night. Didnt panic and leg it when AA went for big punches, but usually slipped them and got in some good counter shots. He put AA on his ass with a good counter and opened up a cut as well. When he was well up on the cards i thought, now he's gonna run like ****. But, by and large he didnt, he showed some glimpses of the running man that we saw in the Froch fight but it was rare. Also he didnt try and clinch everytime AA got of some shots, instead he used his refelexes, fast feet to get out of the way and even counter punch a bit.
Towards the end of the fight AA was getting into it more, he floored Dirrel (ref didnt call it but he floored him). I thought to myself now we're gonna see a champion like performance and pull a KO out of the bag when behind on the cards, but to my surprise, AA lost his head. He kept complaining about low blows (nothing unusual there), and took his eye of the ball and let Dirrel come at him as the ref didnt stop the action to warn Dirrel.
then when Direl slipped (always seemed to slip on the logo in AA's corner that got wet between rounds) AA hit him when he was down. I kinda missed it first time, but the replay clearly shows Dirrel down on one (near enough both) knee(s) and not only does AA hit him, it looks calculated too. It wasnt an instant reflex as Dirrel had been down for well over a second.
Correctly DQd by the ref (who maybe should have been closer to the action so he could jump in but thats nitpicking really). I gave AA the benefit of the doubt at first, thinking it may just have been a moment of madness, an accident or whatever, but in the interview he said Dirrel was acting and gave him no credit what so ever. Dirrel deserves the next 25 oscars in a row if he was acting there, he was ****ed; well and truely out of it!
So i went into the fight thinking AA was a classy champion, and wanting Dirrel to get brutally KOd. I got my wish, but man i wish i hadnt! Havent read through reports yet, so i dunno what AA has had to say since, but he showed no class what so ever in the aftermath of the fight. I hope it was just adrenalin and shock that brought those comments and he comes out and apologises.
Hope Dirrel recovers fully, and im not gonna become a fan of him yet (it'll take more than one good fight ot wipe Froch Dirrel out of my memory) i hope he reaches the semi finals of the super 6. He deserves it.
Pre-fight i wandered how Dirrel would react to his contraversial loss to Froch - would he learn from his mistakes and fight more and not be so negative, or rely on some generous judging in his home town. He learned and was well ahead on im sure even AA biggest fan's cards. Now, how will he react to being brutally KOd? Will he get the fear, and go back to being the running man so he doenst have to go through that again? or will he take it on the chin, and fight like he did tonight again? Hopefully the latter.
And AA - how will he react to his first loss? Will he bounce back and take all his anger out on Froch, or will it ruin his confidence?
Sorry, didnt realize that post was gonna be as long as that!
