I remember when championship fights were 15 rounds before they switched to 12 for the safety of the fighters. If not for the extra 3 rounds fights like Leanord-Hearns, Arguello-Pryor and many more may have had different winners. I wonder how history the last twenty years or so would have changed if they still went 15. A: Do you think it has really helped the overall safety of fighters? B: Would you prefer that championship fights still went a little longer?
Overall..Good or Bad for Boxing?

I'm happy with twelve rounds. When I watch classic fights 15 seems like a bit too many. Sometimes fighter would just beeze through the middle ones. Twelve brings more of a sense or urgency. There are a lot of twelfth round knockouts (witness Hopkins-Trinidad or Trinidad-Vargas) because I think the losing fighter gets desperate for a KO and therefore gets careless, and the winning fighter still has enough juice to knock them down instead. If the fight drags onto 15 Hopkins and Trinidad may have been too tried to put down their opponents.Last edited by Bombardier; 12-02-2004, 12:39 PM. -
12 rounds is fine imo, 15 was too dangerous for the fighters I think, because when a guy gets really beaten and tired those last punches he receives are the most devastating.
As for the big guys it would be nice if they could have juice for 12, so as for 15...;-)Comment
