There's no suggestion he started taking it before he retired. He seems to have got very bored and direction-less since he retired and started taking it for that reason. You'd have thought that with all his money, he ought to be able to find some legitimate interests to occupy him, but a lot of successful sportsmen fail to do so when they retire, unfortunately. Shows that money isn't everything!
