The biggest sports event available at the end of 2000. Ego and pride on both sides kept it from being signed in November/December 2000. No other plausible explanation for this omission. I will always wish that the Trinidad camp just said "**** it. Give Top Rank whatever they want already. Just make the fight for 154lbs and get contract signed by Christmas; Felis Navidad" 
Every thing else could have been put on hold or sped up for the New Year's biggest fight to take place in the spring of 2001. Don King could begin his Middleweight Championship tournament in the late summer/fall and Oscar would simply move up to 154 slightlly sooner than he eventually did when he fought that Spaniard for the WBC Super Welterweight title in 2001.
With all the momentum these two champions had in the fall of 2000; it makes me wonder how the powers that be at HBO could let this one get away? Could such a travesty occur again with Mayweather and Pacquaio?
