I wonder why Pong's handlers sheltered him so much for all those years when he was more than capable of beating better fighters than he beat back in the day. I think the dude is a good fighter. But this is a serious question I have.

I have been critical of him in the past because I felt he wasted his first title run fighting most second-rate opposition and not taking on the division's best (Vic D, Acre, Donaire, etc). But his two recent wins, against a decent Miranda and now Kameda, are first rate. In fact, this win might turn out to be the best one on his resume.
I think he beats Naito again next, but hope he gets Sosa or Narvaez or even Kameda again before he retires.Comment

I hope silencers enters this thread. This was something i hoped would happen in particular because i wanted to Wonjongkam to have some type of limelight after spending years in obscurity and losing to daisuke naito like he did. This guy has been deep in the fight game for years with little to no reckignition for his efforts. I am glad to hear this.Comment

Its not that they shetlered him, but its the fact that its not cheap to bring someone like him all the way to the united states. Fights against darchinyan and arce were always discussed but never materialized for the sheer fact that they werent willing to pay him anything.Comment

$ and regionalization. Same problem most little men have. Looking back, he wasn't THAT sheltered anyways. Naito was a good fighter who kept improving. Miranda and Kameda are strong wins after he's lost a step. I agree it would have been nice to see him against the full field.Last edited by crold1; 03-27-2010, 12:38 PM.Comment

I actually was the only one who voted for this upset though :PNot an upset at all in my opinion.
Not a lot of casual fans understand that Wonjongkam is a hell of a fighter.
We don't get much coverage over here in the states but the guy is knocking on ATG status at or around his weight class with his resume'.
He's 20-1-1 in world title fights. That's impressive.Comment
