Comments Thread For: Joan Guzman Overweight, Ali Funeka Fight in Doubt

Multiple sources have told BoxingScene.com that Joan Guzman is well over the weight for tomorrow's bout with Ali Funeka, who are scheduled to fight for the vacant IBF lightweight title. Guzman, who has a history of weight issues, is rumored to be at 144-pounds. If that is true, there is no way Guzman will be able to shed off that much weight. Guzman was unable to make weight for his lightweight title bout with Nate Campbell in September 2008. He was several pounds over, the fight was canceled and he served a minor suspension. Best way to duck a fight you know you can't win is to come in over weight I guess.......I thought dude was a hypejob when I saw him in the first Funeka fight. He had a good record somehow but he lacks dedication it appears- what a shame, I wanted to see if he could earn a win this time.

When will we start heavily fining and suspending fighters for not making weight? The fans make the sport and we continue to be disappointed when fights aren't made because fighters aren't serious enough about their careers. This is a disgrace.

He needs to get his act together and stop doing this especially to his opponents. He either needs to learn how to train or move up in weight. This is getting ridiculous.

This talented guy is waisting his career. Very unprofessional. Funeka deserved this rematch as they jobbed him last time.

It’s funny, even with the self proclaimed “greatest trainer of all time” Floyd SR he had the same issue….
