MISMATCH MAY PROVE FATAL!
By Cliff "24-Karat" Rold- As it is currently being circulated around the Internet, diminutive warrior Ruben Contreras of Ciudad Juarez, Mexico lingers in the dark place between life and death at a Los Angeles hospital, his condition declared the ominous "critical but stable." How he got into that hospital room is a statement about the flawed structure of a sport that can never seem to fix its flaws. Saturday night, Contreras, a super flyweight (115-pounders) stepped into the ring with a record of 9-16 fighting at 110 pounds for the first time since 1998 (and as a last minute replacement one must wonder how he cut the weight). His opponent, 2000 US Olympian Brian Viloria, stepped between the ropes with a record of 17-0 with 11 KO's and a signed shot at the WBC 108 lb. title on July 30 against Eric Ortiz. In boxing, this sort of mismatch is labeled a 'tune-up.'
