MANILA, Philippines—Nobody can measure up to Manny Pacquiao right now. Not Floyd Mayweather Jr., not Shane Mosley.
Outspoken James “Lights Out” Toney, the Hall of Fame-bound International Boxing Association heavyweight champion, made the candid observation after watching Pacquiao dominate Ghanaian Joshua Clottey on March 13 at the $1.2 billion Cowboys Stadium in Arlington, Texas.
The smaller, lighter Pacquiao swarmed all over Clottey with bunches of punches throughout the 12-round bout to earn a unanimous decision victory and retain his WBO welterweight crown.
“Pacquiao’s on fire,” Toney told FightHype. com. “Mayweather gives angles, but not the odd and awkward angles that Pacquiao gives and as far as work rate and activity, forget about it.”
Blown away by the 1,231 punches Pacquiao unleashed against the gun-shy Clottey, the 41-year-old Toney said the Filipino ring icon would beat any one of the two Americans battling on May 1 at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada.
“They aint’ messing with Pacquiao right now, man; none of them!” Toney said. “Mayweather ain’t ------- with Pacquiao right now.”
According to Toney, who holds a 72-win (44KOs), 6-loss-3-draw record, Pacquiao is a problem that neither Mayweather nor Mosley can solve.
Apart from Pacquiao’s renowned speed, Toney cited the seven-time world champion’s combinations as the reason why he’s a class all by himself. “Pacquiao throws a lot of combinations, punches in bunches, and from all angles,” said Toney.
In a related development, former world heavyweight champion Michael Moorer called Pacquiao’s volume of punches thrown against Clottey as phenomenal.
Moorer, who once worked as Freddie Roach’s assistant at the Wild Card Gym, told FightHype.com that Pacquiao’s work ethic sets him apart.
Pacquiao is taking a long break from boxing to rest his weary body.
The pound-for-pound king is flying to Gen. Santos City Friday to officially launch his candidacy for Congress in the lone district of Sarangani province.
