Comments Thread For: Hopkins vs Jones Rematch: Trainers Discuss The Fight, Strategy

Thanks, everybody, for joining us. We have a very special call today. This is the season for boxing, and we are looking forward to a terrific fight coming up shortly, April 3rd. Today we have some esteemed trainers on the call for both Bernard Hopkins and Roy Jones: Naazim Richardson, Bernard Hopkins' trainer, Alton "Coach Merk" Merkerson, Roy Jones, Jr.'s trainer. We're also joined today by Richard Schaefer, Chief Executive Officer, Golden Boy Promotions, and Bobby Goodman, Chief Operating Officer of Square Ring Promotions. Without further ado, I'll turn it over to Richard Schafer to talk about the fight and the people on the call. [Click Here To Read More]

Expect headbutts, clinches, fake low blows, from Slopkins and Roid to be put into a coma before the 4th round...

some more revealing stuff about the green fight. Everything about that just seems fishy as hell, and especially now learning the IBO didn't take any urine tests on top of everything else.

The funny thing about this for me is that I have always always always said that Naazim, in the way that he thinks and talks and expresses himself, reminds me A LOT of Roy's dad, Big Roy. If you talk to one about the boxing game, especially the mental part of it all, its like talking to the other. Interesting to me. As far as this fight,. and I know Im probably in the minority here but...I think if Hops tries to match technique with RJ, even at this stage, he will get outmaneuvered...

Coach Merk doesn't sound all that confident in Roy's chances.

Naz sounds focused and ready like always , merk does sound like he wants the fight to just be over with and just doesn't want Roy to get hurt. It weird how he talks bout the wraps for green wasn't found out til after the fight, no wonder b-hop doesn't want to fight in "Europe" .merk should have made it a absolute must to be in the same room so see the wrapping of greens hands,.it would have been coo to see a countdown at least on hbo rite before the fight to hear from the fighters hype it up more, but I'm pretty the press conference on fight week will be funny as hell. saw the rivals preview on fsn and it was kind of redundant footage. Final four games and this fight should be a good night.

Interesting information from both trainers. Was a big fan of Roy but I would say the old Roy would KO the new Roy or Roy 10 yars ago would blast the current Roy we have today.
Roy should have quit after the Ruiz fight or go out on his shield in the last Tarver fight which was there to take but he was scared to take it.

If RJ would have quit after the Ruiz fight it would have been similar to Ali stopping after the 3rd Frazier fight...in hindsight it's a GREAT idea...but at the time each guy was on such a high I am sure they thought to themselves, "How can I stop now??"

Yeah, I often think after the Ruiz fight, I started to dislike Roy.

His confidence was ridiculously high to the point of delusion.

Hearing him saying he'd ko the Klitschko's made me cringe.

I know he was always confident, but sometimes he didn't know when to stop.

After the Ruiz victory, he was out of control until the Tarver loss.
