When i was a kid I remember watching boxing on T.V. with my Dad. Larry Holmes was getting ready to defend his title against someone.(the name slips me) On the undercard was a fight between Mike Weaver and then champ John Tate. The talk was a Holmes-Tate fight in the future. No one even thought it possible that Weaver would win. And for 14 straight rounds that was little reason to doubt that being true. I mean he was completely dominated throughout the fight. Then in the 15th round Weaver connected with a homerun punch and Big John Tate fell like a tree. I remember him landing face first on the canvas and laying motionless. It was the closest thing to a 'Rocky' like ending i have ever seen. To this day that has still got to be one of the most dramatic endings I have ever seen. I fell in love with the sport then. Do any of you remember when you first really were taken in by the sport due to some dramatic fight or some colorful fighter or dramatic moment?

I got into boxing after seeing Tyson/Douglas and Chavez/Taylor in Febuary 1990(?) I was hooked bigtime, and remain so.

For sheer savagery, Hagler-Hearns comes quickly to mind.
for extra-ordinary display of talent on both sides, SRLeonard (offense)-WBenitez(defense), is what I recall.
And, how can I omit those Ali-Frazier summits?
Those fights however were not the ones that got me hooked. I can't recall...
Oh, well, that was centuries ago!!!Last edited by grayfist; 12-02-2004, 12:23 AM.
