  • What does it mean to say a fighter telegraphs their punches

Just a question, some people say some fighters telegraphs their punches, i want to kno what it means?

  • #2
It means they are not using any feints or footwork to set up their punches.

They're basically throwing basic punches with little to no creativity in the setup.

The opponent can see everything coming.

means that they do something that kind of tells thier opponent what they are going to throw

      for example

Jermain Taylor ****s his right arm back before he throws a punch giving his opponent a cluse as to when he will throw it

You can see the punch coming a mile away.

My definition would be describing a guys punch you can see a mile away and he does it the same way everytime. Same motion, same muscle memory etc..You can figure it out and see it coming. Best I can describe it.

It usually means something in their punching mechanics give away what they are going to throw.

IIRC Cotto leans his shoulders forward a little bit before he throws his left hook. Little thing's like that.

If you have ever fought you can tell by watching their body language. Most guys tense up right before and have some sort of sign. Most great fighters learn to feint, and mix up the bodies signals they send out so you don't catch on to them. Bums do stuff like wind up before punching. When you notice a pattern then it's easy to set up a crushing counter. The worst punch to get hit by is a counter when you don't expect it.

                  some ways are
                  1) lifting your shoulder before you punch (the most common telegraph and the first one fighters are trained to look for)
                  2) ****ing your fist back before you throw
                  3) punching in the same combination all the time.
                  4) punching at the same time in your "rythm" all the time.
                  5) winding up- see below

go youtube beibut shumenov to see the most telegraphed punches by a world champion in the game. it's really pathetic.
