Recently I spoke with the former undisputed lightweight world champion Juan "Baby Bull" Diaz. Although not a legend in the sport, he was quick to share his thoughts on Pacquiao. Before we get to that, I was informed that a rematch between Diaz and Juan Manuel Marquez is in the works. The former world champ is hoping to avenge the loss that he suffered in the first fight.
During my conversation, Juan commented on Manny Pacquiao's most recent victory over Joshua Clottey. Diaz believes that Manny Pacquiao stands alone on top of the boxing world, " You have to give it to Manny Pacquiao. Floyd gave up his pound for pound title. When someone comes along and takes that spot, the previous king has to take it back. Manny Pacquiao is number one in the world. It is Mayweather's duty to take the crown back. If he wants it he is going to have to take it back."
Diaz on who would win between Pacquiao and Mayweather - "That's a hard one to predict. They both are extremely great fighters. They both have unbelievable skills. It's extremely hard to hit Mayweather, but then you have Manny Pacquiao who just dominates guys. Can he dominate Mayweather? If he keeps throwing punches at Mayweather, something is bound to land."
On Mayweather's skills - "Floyd has great defense and he can punch. Mayweather is also fast, a lot faster than Clottey.
On Pacquiao's skills - "It's hard to pick a winner in this fight. Manny has just dominated his opponents. Manny is fast and he has power. Manny throws a lot of punches, and he is very strong."
Mississippians are just like the rest of the boxing world, they for the most part want a fight between Mayweather and Pacquiao. Every fight card that this writer covers from Tunica, MS to Biloxi, MS the talk of the evening from the hallways to the dressing rooms are of Pacquiao vs. Mayweather. In order for this fight to happen, Floyd is going to have to get past a very dangerous Shane Mosley. That is no small task, not in the least.
Mississippi's Stan Nichols, the President of USA Boxing's Southern Association, was blown away the first time he saw Pacquiao in action, "I remember asking myself, who in the heck is this guy?" Nichols watched Pacquiao for the first time when he fought Barrera. Nichols went on to say, " This little guy came out of nowhere and was thumping Barrera. I knew when I first saw him that this guy was going to be around for a long time."
Pacquiao's iconic accomplishments have forced the legends of the sport to respect him. Evander Holyfield, and Roy Jones Jr come to mind. Both of these legends have much respect for Pacquiao. When I was in Los Angeles a few weeks ago covering Pacquiao's camp, I handed Manny my cell phone. Who was on the other end? None other than the great Roy Jones Jr. Both legends, Pacquiao and Jones shared a conversation with some laughs and much respect.

Evander Holyfield during a conversation with me expressed how good Pacquiao is. Holyfield admires how Manny uses his legs to drive his punching power. He admires Manny's strong faith in God as well. When a 4 time heavyweight champion of the world is expressing these kinds of thoughts, it is a huge honor. Pacquiao shared with this writer how he felt about Holyfield's comments, "Evander is one of my idols. I watched many of his fights, and it's an honor for me to hear his kind words."
The legends of the sport are pretty much in agreement that Manny Pacquiao is an all time great. The history books all agree.
