Comments Thread For: Promoters Back ESPN's Loughrey, Don King Fires Back

Since our earlier update regarding ESPN's March 26 doubleheader, multiple promoters have contacted BoxingScene.com in defense of Doug Loughrey, the boxing program director for ESPN. As reported earlier, the championship doubleheader featuring Cory Spinks vs. Cornelius Bundrage and Steve Cunningham vs. Matt Godfrey, was postponed due to a contractual dispute between ESPN and the event promoter Don King. It's being claimed that Loughrey made numerous "last minute" changes to what King had assumed were going to be the terms for the network to carry the show. [Click Here To Read More]

King's not in the position he used to be, to make certain demands. He needs to know the the game has changed and get with the program. "King is old school" yeah, his version of old school is him pocketing all the money, negotiating all of the terms in his favor, and walking away with the rights to everything.

has ESPN ever even exercised a "right of first refusal" clause?

I've signed that clause when I've done ESPN shows in the past and I never had them even inquire about the fighters next move after the show was done.

ESPN hasn't diverted from their standard agreement for some time so probably not. You would think they would.

I feel sorry for Steve Cunningham, Guillermo Jones and other Don King fighters.

It's an injustice that they don't get a chance to fight often enough.

I have been part of many ESPN fights and the contract is always the same except for the money changes sometimes. I have seen the money as low as 25 grand and as high as 45 grand. ESPN has never asked for rights on fighters after their fights in all of the ESPN shows I have been part of. King has 2 fighters that don't draw and 2 fighters that HBO or Showtime are not interested in on the A side of a card. His best bet is to deliver Spinks and Cunningham on the B side fir good money and pray they win.

Onc again a perfect example of whats wrong with boxing. There's injustice and an overall hatred on Don King by the networks. In fact at times I feel that you can call it downright racism. Arum, GBP and all these other promoters get dates but King can't and not just with ESPN, but add Showtime and HBO into the mix also. But then again Don King doesn't make it any better with his dishonorable business practices and just straight ******ity. The fighters and the fans are who suffer the most. I think DKP should just look to do their own PPV's because its obvious the networks wont give him a fair shake and he doesn't have the common sense to do the right thing.

Don king is a business man....an old school croooked one. I'm not hatin' he's quite entertaining and he puts on good little shows (waving little flags! classic!!!) I don't think it's Racism though... Just because GBP AND Top Rank...shaw..etc... get HBO/Showtime dates does not mean it's Racism...They just hava a better stable. Don King was just playing Hardball with little ESPN. Since he cant play hard ball with the big networks like Show/HBO. Heck! his own stable leaves him. Campbell, diaz, Funeka....cmon'!!! just look @ king...he's a likeable guy but you just can't trust that FRO with that fake Smile! ONLY IN AMERICA!!!!
