Boxing also played a role in Hopkins' rehabilitation. Graterford was one of six prisons that participated in a joint boxing program. While in prison, he won four national middleweight penitentiary boxing championships. "Boxing was my best therapy," he remembers. "It saved my sanity. I'd boxed when I was young; started when I was seven years old and had some amateur fights. In prison, they said I was punch-drunk. They said I was crazy. I used to run the prison yard like a gerbil on a wheel, around and around, around and around, saying over and over to myself, 'Someday, I'm gonna get out of here. Someday, I'm gonna be a champion.'"

I've heard a few people say that when bHop first got to prison that he sought out the biggest baddest guy in the prison and beat him down. Do any of you have a link to an article or have you heard this also?

That is usually a wise strategy when you go to a federal prison. If you think you can do it.

I thought it was some scientific thing at first but since you joke so much, I thought it could have been a bunch of ****s. Well, it ain't my fault after what you posted on the first page.

I did well to avoid **** when I was inside. I got myself in trouble inside purposely to get to solitary confinement just to escape ****. It was a case of I would rather be locked away and isolated than ****d by a fellow male.

Bernard is lucky that they had boxing in his prison, being put inside for four years wrecked my boxing. I was ready to turn pro before that and sure that I would win a world title. But four years away from the ring, not out until I was 30, I knew it was too bad and too late.
