Mayweather cannot use 8 ounce gloves at 154 because it states in the rule book at any fight above 147 had to be fought with 10 ounce glove at that time, So am sure Mayweather never asked for 8 ounce gloves, De la hoya gave him gloves that would make his hands swell up, gloves that would probably make him injured his hands during the fight and Mayweather had to accept it because he was the one who wanted to fight oscar and oscar had all the leverage at that time.
