  • Comments Thread For: Povetkin, Teddy Atlas Admit Mistakes Are Still There

Russian heavyweight Alexander Povetkin and his trainer Teddy Atlas commented on the bout with Javier Mora to the German broadcaster ARD, as well as the future meeting with the WBO/IBF champion Wladimir Klitschko. Yesterday in Berlin, Germany, Povetkin, the official IBF title contender, knocked Mora out in the 5th round.

Povetkin was better before he started working with Atlas.

Povetkin has the greatest amateur record of all time at super heavyweight, with something like 12 gold medals in international tournaments (including Olympic Gold in 2004).

Sasha appeared more confident against quality opponents like Larry Donald and Eddie Chambers, than he did yesterday against the tomato can Javier Mora.

      The Tyson "expert".

I don't know what Teddy Atlas has done as a trainer, to have been given the reputation as one of the top trainers in boxing. Other than a connection with Michael Moorer many years ago, and a very briefy few weeks connection with the 15 year old amateur Tyson, I can't think of anything.

Of course, I haven't read his biography.

I believe his main claim to fame is his longtime TV commentating job, which always included one of his "expert" demonstrations of what the protagonists were going to do in the ring, although his prognostications as to who the winner of ANY fight would be almost invariably turned out to be the "kiss of death" to that poor, unsuspecting fighter.

In other words, his "commentating mouth" was greater than his "boxing mouth"..... i believe that his own real boxing experience was limited (very) to 9amateur bouts when a kid...........some of which he did not win....

      Just my opinion.

        You are 100% correct.

Atlas is a self-aggrandizing phony who accomplished little as a trainer. He got lucky when Cus D'Amato hired him as an assistant.

And Teddy's commentating is questionable because it seems pretty bizarre at times.

I think Povetkin's power is not very good, he hit Mora with a lot of clean punches and still couldn't get him out of there until the 5th round. Ibragimov is not a huge puncher either and he got Mora out of there in one.

Povetkin is fine.he's undefeated & his last 3 fights were tuneups for his title shot.estrada went rounds,Nolan usually went rounds, mora was just a stay busy & work on some things kinda fight.all these guys were chosen because of their lack of power.estrada & Nolan are light hitting, defensive boxers & mora a bum.he's undefeated & has fought better competition than any other contender in the world.look at his resume after 18 fights! ,kingpin & sosnowski are not deserving of a title shot.chambers & povetkin won eliminators.at least arreola won an ibf eliminator vs walker & his win over mccline was ok but everyone knows mccline was not there to fight...6 months before arreola beat mccline, mccline beat mollo in a WBC eliminator.povetkin will be ready & whoever he fights it should be an ok fight.povetkin would have fought wlad instead of Rahman but got injured.wlad has been injured as well so there fight has been on hold.no way povetkin risks vs guinn or anyone who is a threat.

I like Povetkin, hes just to damn small.

I like Atlas too, but I never thought he had a good personality for training. He is extremely knowledgeable. But his temper and lack of any patience is all wrong for training fighters.

I'll never forget when he told Eddie Chambers after the Peters fight, "your the reason I quit training," because he wouldnt throw his right hand. LoL

Didn't D'Amato fire him almost right away after he threatened Tyson with a pistol, some 30 odd years ago??

As for his "temperament", I think he eventually "stinks out" his welcome because of his love for "psychollergising" his fighters. This of course comes from his overweening self-
glorification arising from his huge ego.

What I like most about Teddy is the big charity dinner and fundraiser he makes every year in honour of his late father, which must do a lot of good work where it's needed. That more than makes up for his many unlikeable traits, as far as I'm concerned.

Besides, I don't know him, and he doesn't know me.
