Against a stationary Clottey who didn't want to fight, the punches were not wasted. It got him ahead on the cards easily and there was no risk for him to throw that many as Clottey clearly didn't want to fight.

However, you are correct, Pacman wont be able to come close throwing that many punches against the best counter puncher in the game. Mayweather will be countering all night along and making Pacman miss. I believe that missed punches takes more out of you than a blocked punch. A missed punch affects you mentally as well, you start to think twice before throwing.

After seeing this fight, I'd expect PB to retire from boxing. Mayweather would never let himself thrown into a Pacman's den. He will be devoured in an instant.
