What happened those two years after James Braddock won the HW title from Baer? After he won the title, he lost it in his next fight, but his next fight was two years later. Was he injured? Was his sitting on the title?

The old story is that Max Bear felt sorry for Braddock and threw their fight to give Braddock the pay day. He figured he would ko Braddock in the rematch. Unfortunately, Joe Louis had other plans and Bear never got his rematch. I don't know for sure what happened in between, but I'm sure Braddock did a "Dempsey and sat on the title. I'll have to do some looking to refresh the old memory -

Braddock was waiting to fight the winner of the Joe Louis - Max Schmeling fight, which was about a year after his win against Baer. No way was he going to risk a fight with anyone else before that and lose the big payday he would receive with either of these two fighters.
Now, after Schmeling won that fight, he was all set to fight Braddock. Problem is that Schmeling and his handlers went back to Germany while Louis' were still in the States. Louis' guys were also a lot slicker than Schmeling's. Anyway, there were a number of delays while people from all sides were trying to get the fight done and in the end Braddock ended up fighting Louis.
So you take the one year waiting for the Louis - Schmleing fight + another year of drawn-out negotiations and you have your two years.Comment

i have a book about the history of boxing, it has a lot of info on J.J. Braddock. Max baer should have won their fight, he was by far the more natuarlly talented, in fact Baer had all the ability to be a great champion, but he was lazy and didn't train, he liked partying and ****ing hollywood sluts instead. Braddock had just come through a real bad run of hard luck and against an out of shape Baer Braddock won because he wanted it more. When Braddock fought Joe louis he knew he was going to lose, so he demanded a 60 - 40 or 70 -30 purse split for giving young louis a shot at the title. even though he lost the fight he took home the lion's share of the cash.Comment

Also to add on to what "beeatch" said I read that Braddock also got 10% or a very similiar figure in many of Louis's next championship purses. Very smart move by Braddock to say the least.Comment

It's too bad Max Bear doesn't have more popularity. He's the guy a movie should have been made about. What a character he was. Ali said alot of his goofing he stole from Bear. He was drunk in the Louis fight. In fact, they found him on a bar stool the day of the fight. Watch the film sometime and check out his face. laughing alot in that one. He was an original clown for sure.Comment
