Judging by the interest of the television, Juanma Lopez is already in the big leagues of world boxing.
Or at least, earning a regular place during spring training.
The cable channels HBO and Showtime are now competing for the opportunity to transmit the next bout of the Puerto Rican champion, explained yesterday Ivan Rivera, president of the Puerto Rico Best Boxing, Lopez's co-promoter.
"All indications are it is going to be here in Puerto Rico," Rivera said yesterday. "We have two possible scenarios: the Coliseum in Puerto Rico (Hato Rey), or the Ruben Rodriguez Coliseum (in Bayamon)," he said.
"What Top Rank (promoter company of Lopez) is still squaring is the (transmission) television," said the promoter.
"It may be on HBO or Showtime. Not yet decided. "
Lopez's last fight, a knockout in seven rounds on the reigning champion Steve Luevano , 23 January, was broadcast on HBO.
The commentators expressed that HBO was impressed with the performance the of hard-hitting lefty.
Soon after, Bob Arum, president of Top Rank, said he had talked with executives of the channel, and that they showed much interest in acquiring the rights to broadcast the next bouts of the boricua.
However, as Rivera said, it seems that Showtime is also trying to sign the undefeated WBO FeatherWeight champion.
Lopez's next fight will be against the Filipino Bernabe Concepcion, who became the mandatory challenger after beating Mario Santiago by descicsion on February 13 in Las Vegas, Nevada.
Concepcion's msrk is 28-3-1 with 15 knockouts.
Lopez fights to 28-0 with 25 knockouts and has won world championships at 122 and 126 pounds.
