Mayweather, HBO see little overlap between boxing and MMA
12:52 AM
Flamboyant boxer Floyd Mayweather sees his family at the root of UFC President Dana White's career in combat sports.
"My uncle, Jeff Mayweather, is the one who started Dana White," Mayweather told USA TODAY staffers. "He didn't know nothing about boxing. He had met my uncle Jeff. My uncle Jeff taught him all about boxing, about contact sports."
Mayweather, fellow welterweight Shane Mosley, along with executives from HBO and Golden Boy Promotions, visited USA TODAY last week to promote the upcoming Mayweather-Mosley bout. The question-and-answer session saw Mayweather speak briefly about MMA and its lack of a tradition compared to boxing:
Boxing and MMA fans don't cross paths much, said Mark Taffet, senior vice president with HBO:
After the session, Fighting Stances spoke briefly to Richard Schaefer, president of Golden Boy, which co-promoted MMA with Affliction Entertainment before the latter sank last summer. Golden Boy now prefers to focus on its core business of boxing, Schaefer said, although he added that he believes there is room for more than one big player in MMA.
