In the beginning of the fight you can see the crowd keep looking towards one direction (away from the fight) and people kept standing up to get a better look. Anyone know what they were gawking at?

This sounds like it's probably true. The reason being is because everyone started clapping several minutes later when he must have shown signs of being okay. It's not like people would start clapping in appreciation of a couple of crowd warriors who just got into a fight and put on a show.
