Comments Thread For: Devon Alexander’s Uppercuts Down Juan Urango

by David P. Greisman - UNCASVILLE, Conn. – How to stand out in a crowded, talented junior welterweight division? Make the other guy fall down.

The man who comes out atop the 140-pound weight class will have triumphed in a Sweet Science version of King of the Mountain, fending off all comers until he’s the rightful ruler.

Devon Alexander staked his claim Saturday by sending Juan Urango tumbling down, scoring a technical knockout 72 seconds into the eighth round.

Alexander floored Urango twice in that final stanza, each time with a right uppercut. Each time Urango rose by the count of eight, but after the second knockdown referee Benjy Esteves waved the fight off.

At a time in which Urango seemed to have gained control and looked to be gaining momentum, Alexander seized both back – decisively, instantly and conclusively.

That the end came that way was surprising based on how the fighters matched up before they got in the ring and how the action played out once the opening bell rang.

Devon Alexander is a man of speed and slickness. Urango is a man of pressure and power. [Click Here To Read More]

Devon Alexander was highly impressive tonight in defeating Juan Urango by TKO. Alexander showed boxing ability, speed, power, and toughness. Forget Zab Judah. I would love for Alexander to fight either Timothy Bradley or Amir Khan later on this year.

Stopping a fighter like Urango is pretty damn impressive. Timmy Bradley has some competition it seems.

Alexander might be better than Bradley. He's certainly more polished with his punches. Either way 140 looks very good right now.

i picked alexander to win a wide unanimous decision, never expected him to stop someone like Urango who's known to have a great chin

kinda makes Berto look worse for not stopping Urango

alexander has the skills and mindset to be a special fighter

I think Alexander could beat Berto and Clottey and I might slightly favor him over Cotto. The only guys I think he couldn't handle at 147 are Mosley and May. Pac-Alexander is a toss up fight.
