He is not that bad. His scorecards end up coming out a lot better than some of the real judges cards quite often

He like Larry Merchant will occasionally let bias cloud his judgment. There's no place for anyone in the sport who is bias. He's not the worst I've ever seen, but he has had iffy cards.

Hal Lederman is actually very good at scoring fights. He may score a round wrong from time to time, but his scores are never outlandish.

Teddy Atlas, Al Bernstein, and Nick Charles are terribly BIASED when scoring fights. But Lederman, even when he doesn't like a boxer, is still able to score fairly.

Lederman has some bizarre moments and tends to favor ineffective aggression at times, but when he gives a strange round, ole boy Larry if he's there, will call him out on it.

That's why HBO needs Larry, or their show will fail.

My question is though, why the **** is he there? you can barely tell what he's saying, and all he does is read out the rules and give a scorecard now and then. Why on earth do they spend money on having that guy in their crew?
the man was a judge from 67-99 and has been with hbo for 24 years hes a certified legend in this biz.

I appreciate that but his presense seems pointless. He reads out the rules (which any of the other commentators could do) and he gives his scorecard a couple of times a fight.

Regardless of his pedigree and experience it doesn't add anything to have him there; i don't think reading some rules and chipping in a comment (in a hideously annoying voice) vastly improves my evenings experience.

the times he gets an accurate scorecard are just by pure luck and coincidence. he thinks boxing is about coming forward and throwing punches even if they aren't even landing. that's why he had those cuckoo scores in the calzaghe/hopkins and williams/quintana fights.

Generally I agree with his scoring, but occassionaly I wonder what fight he is watching.
