I was watching the Nigel Benn vs Gerald Mccleland fight and at one point early in the fight Mccleland knockdown Benn and had him really hurt but after Benn got up the referee got in Mcclelands way for no reason at all a couple of times.Even when he was braking them up he would get in Mcclelands way for extra seconds at a time and it was all unnesecery.I believe that Mccleland could had ko Benn early and not withstand all those punches he took from Benn therefore that brain injury would had never happen. He really robbed us from a great entertaining ko artist and ****ed up his life real bad!!!
who else thinks it was the refs fault what happen in the Benn vs Mcclellan fight?

No, the damage was done in previous fights, from even the early rounds you could see Mclellan wasn't right, by his facial expressions, it was bound to happen unless he never boxed again.Comment

you have a very valid point he did had damage before but still he took some heavy shots in the fight and the ref was in Benns side the whole fight!!!Comment

True. Mclellan wouldn't have been able to fight again but he would have been in a better state.Comment

The ref should have stopped Benn from hitting MacLellan on the back of the head - that's illegal because it causes brain damage. Many years ago, Max Baer actually killed a boxer called Campbell with a hard, deliberate rabbit punch.
Benn was always allowed to rabbit punch by the UK refs though. I remember when he fought Collins the first time, he kept taking wild swings to the back of his head. But Benn missed on the last, wild big punch to the back of Collins' head and injured his leg - poet's justice, I think.Comment
