    Future Bouts: Witter vs. Mayweather

Apologies if this one has been discussed before, but I didn't realise until today that Witter's win over Lovemour N'Dou back in March has made him the WBC Mandatory Contender for the winner of Gatti-Mayweather.

Now even though I've wagered on Gatti, I don't actually expect him to win. And even if he does, as much as I like him, I don't imagine Witter would have problems beating him.

But what of the more likely proposition - Witter vs. Mayweather? I'd suggest Witter is the harder hitter, but only having seen two Mayweather fights it's difficult to tell. Not that power would have much of a part to play in a fight between those two.

It's all in this month's World Boxing (August 2005 edition), including Witter giving his verdict on the six main contenders in his division (Tszyu/Gatti/Mayweather/Cotto/Harris/Hatton). Although the confident Witter believes he'd be able to beat them all (but then, if he didn't, why would he be in the game otherwise?), interestingly he believes Tszyu and Gatti would be points victories only.

Here's Witter on Mayweather: "Moves brilliantly, very slick, quick, and sharp, which is why he'll beat Gatti. With me it'd be a tricky fight, a chess game with lots of moves. He wouldn't be able to walk me onto his punches, and I don't think he'd take the power of a bigger man like me who can match him for speed. I'd take him out."

I'm guessing that Witter would perform in the same fashion as he did vs. Judah: he'll jab, run, jab, get popped by a combo, run, run run run....for 12 straight rounds....

can't see Floyd having trouble with Witter, but it would most likely go the distance

I would love to this this match up!... They're both very skillfull boxers.

I wouldn't be sure which one to pick?

Witter is a big puncher, and he's definatly a more dangerous fighter than Corley/Brusseles/Gatti.

He took the Judah fight at 2 weeks notice or something like that and was a kid back then. I don't like him but he has improved. He's got no chance against PBF apart from a puncher's.

Jason Rowland pulled out as Judah opponent with nine day's notice. Witter wasn't in training, weighed 154 pounds and had only ever twice been past six rounds, never past eight. One of the judges had Witter up by the halfway mark. (I know all this off the top of my head, of course, I'm not typing it verbatim from the magazine. )

Looking at boxrec, although his debut and eighth bout were draws, this remains his only loss, with a 31 (19 KOs) record. Unfortunately for Witter he's generally high risk low reward, so has up until recently been kept out of the big bouts, particularly after the lacklustre night against Judah.

It's a shame he's left it so late to step up in class. His record's good but the standard of his opponents have been terrible in general and he should have been mixing it at a much higher level way before he was 30.

To be fair, he's not had much choice in the matter.
