Why boxing sucks in February 2010

Here is a nominal P4P list from another website. I'm not saying this is the definitive P4P list, but it's as good as any other and perfectly illustrates my point... read on if you will...

    01. Manny Pacquiao 50-3-2-(39) Welterweight

Manny is the true P4P champ. But only fought twice in 2009 and will probably only fight once more this year after the Clottey fight. No guarantees about that.

    02. Floyd Mayweather Jr 40-0-(25) Welterweight

Will fight for the second time in two and a half years when he fights Shane Mosley on May 1st.

    03. Shane Mosley 46-5-(39)

Will fight for the second time in 16 months when he fights Mayweather on May 1st.

    04. Bernard Hopkins 49-5-1-(32) Light-heavyweight

Will fight for the second time since October 2008 (17 months) when he fights Roy Jones this April.

    05. Juan Manuel Marquez 49-5-1-(35) lightweight

Fought twice in 12 months. Still without a 2010 fight.

    06. Israel Vazquez 43-4-(31) super-bantamweight

Fights Rafael Marquez in May. Second fight in over two years.

    07. Rafael Marquez 37-5 super-bantamweight

Ditto for Marquez re: Vazquez. Second fight in 26 months.

    08. Chad Dawson 29-0 light-heavyweight

Will fight for the fourth time in two years this June against an opponent TBA. Last four fights have been against the same two fighters aged between 39 and 41 years old.

    09. Paul Williams 38-1-(27) Middleweight

Avoided in the welterweight and middleweight ranks. May fight will be his fourth in 17 months. Against an opponent TBA. Def. not Pavlik and certainly not any of the major welterweight contenders.

    10: Ivan Calderon 33-0-(6)

Five fights in 28 months with nothing scheduled in 2010.

No major title fights between November 14 and March 13.

This list is from secondsout.com with Miguel Cotto removed. You can put Miguel in there if you want. He fought three times last year, but this is apparently his final year in boxing. It really stinks how little we see of the best fighters in our sport.

It's been like this for so long, no reason to ***** about it. Unless boxing popularity really drops, the top fighters will be able to only fight a few times and make a very nice living doing so.

Boxing popularity has dropped and I think inactivity is a big factor in that. When four of the sport's biggest stars fight once in periods between 16 and 26 months, there's a serious problem. It's not a question of supply versus demand. It's just plain ****en greed and complacency.
