MANILA, Philippines—Nonito Donaire Jr. is so determined to get a world title shot he’s willing to move up two weight classes so he could get it.
Donaire, the reigning interim WBA super-flyweight champion, Tuesday raised the possibility of campaigning in the 122 lbs division for a fight against world champion Israel Vasquez or Rafael Marquez.
“If it’s a world title, I will fight anybody,” said Donaire during the PSA Forum Tuesday at the Shakey’s UN Avenue branch in Manila.
The 27-year-old Donaire, who is coming off a knockout victory over Mexican Manuel Vargas last week, had earlier expressed his desire to fight Mexican Fernando Montiel for the reigning WBO bantamweight champion’s crown, although he is not dismissing the possibility of staying at the 115 lbs division.
“I want Montiel because my goal this year is to win the world title,” said Donaire, who was accompanied by his wife, Rachel, at the forum sponsored by Accel, Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corp. (Pagcor), Shakey’s and Outlast Battery.
Donaire fought once in 2008 and twice last year. Donaire looks to fight more this year than in the past two years. He is scheduled to fight against a still undetermined foe on May 8.
“I can go back down to 115 but only for a big, big fight,” he said, and that may involve a rematch with Vid Darchinyan or a fight against Jorge Arce. “The problem is there seems to be weak negotiations among the 115 fighters.”
Donaire said he is tapping trainers Robert Garcia and Jonathan Peñalosa for his next fight.
“We have a very good chemistry,” he said.
Donaire said he is cutting down on commitments outside boxing so that he can undergo at least eight weeks of training for his next fight.
“I want a comfortable eight weeks of training,” said Donaire, who also plans to be at ringside when Filipino ring icon Manny Pacquiao clashes with Ghana’s Joshua Clottey in Arlington, Texas, next month.
