MLB and NFL taking steps to test for HGH; Is Boxing next?

February 24, 2:08 PMSacramento Fight Sports ExaminerRick Rockwell

In light of the major HGH blood testing news out of England, Major League Baseball has announced today that they are taking the steps to immediately implement HGH testing in their minor leagues and hopefully into the majors. An NFL official followed up MLB’s announcement with a statement that the NFL is proposing HGH tests as well. Now the big question is will Boxing follow? Let’s examine further.

"We are well aware of the important news with respect to the HGH blood test in England. We are consulting with our experts concerning immediate steps for our minor league drug program and next steps for our major league drug program. The commissioner remains committed to the position that we must act aggressively to deal with the issue of HGH." Major League Baseball

"Our position is that HGH blood testing has advanced to the point where we are taking steps to incorporate it into our program," Greg Aiello, NFL senior vice president of public relations, Washington Post

With the major news of British rugby player Terry Newton being suspended for 2 years due to testing positive for HGH, other major sports and anti-doping agencies are stepping up and taking notice. Both the MLB and the NFL are taking steps to implement HGH testing. However, the NFL is being met by opposition from the players’ union.

The USADA and WADA have already come out and commented on the landmark success of the HGH test by the UK Anti-Doping Agency.

    * "It's the first time and very significant said, regarding Newton's positive test and subsequent ban. It shows the people who say that HGH cannot be detected that it can. The sports people who said it can't be detected are fooling themselves." David Howman, WADA director general
    * "All of us who have helped develop a test wouldn't put it in place if it wasn't forensically sound and reliable. Particularly in [Newton's] case, it's proof positive the test works." Travis Tygart, USADA chief executive, New York Daily News

    NSAC

I contacted Keith Kizer, Executive Director of the Nevada State Athletic Commission, and his official comment was simply put “I don’t know”. Basically, there’s a process that the NSAC will have to go through to add HGH blood testing. Mr. Kizer can’t just say yes they will start blood testing tomorrow. The NSAC is a government entity that has policies and procedures to follow.

The failed HGH test in England is a historical precedent that will lend the credibility needed for major professional sports to adopt the HGH blood testing. Boxing will start feeling the pressure from other Major sports and from the USADA and WADA. In my opinion, this additional testing might happen sooner rather than later.
