GL: It looked like you were going to fight Michael Katsidis again, but now that fight isn't happening, so when might we expect you back in the ring? "Well, the fight was going to happen, but for some reason it fell through. I was in the gym getting ready and for some reason at the last minute, I don't know if it was him or Golden Boy, but somebody had a change of plan and the fight isn't going to happen anymore. I thought the fight with Katsidis was a good move because it would have been at lightweight and he comes straight at me so I could have used my boxing skills and showed the people that I wasn't done yet. But now it's just a waiting game. Savannah has been talking to them and he let them know that we're willing to fight here in Houston, off TV. They can put a show on here where I'm showcased as well as a couple of other local fighters, and we're waiting to hear back from them right now."
GL: Is this move down to lightweight something you regret not doing after the first Malignaggi fight?
Juan Diaz: "I believe so. I believe I made the mistake in taking the second Malignaggi fight. It wasn't the right fight. I won the first fight, it was close and controversial, but I should have taken the win and moved back down to take a fight to rebuild my career. But that was in the past now, it's 2010 and I'm looking for a better, brighter future."
GL: Is the Katsidis rematch something you're looking to revisit as soon as possible?
JD: "Definitely. He's a great fighter and I think it would be a great match-up for me. He comes straight at you and in 2010 I'm going to show the world that I'm not only a great brawler, but I can fight smarter and that's going to help me last a few more years."
GL: When are you expecting to have a target date on your next fight?
JD: "I'm not sure. Right now we're looking at all of our options. Maybe we'll fight on somebody's undercard. We're keeping our mind open to any suggestions Golden Boy might throw at us because as you know they have a lot of dates coming up. To fight on one of those would be good, I just want to get back in the ring and get going again."
GL: Closing thoughts.
JD: "I want to thank ********** and you for the interview. I want to let all of my fans know that I've been training hard in 2010. I'm anxious to get back in the ring and show the fans the new and old baby bull."
