Brendon Smith, manager of WBO interim-junior welterweight champion Michael Katsidis, wanted to BoxingScene.com to know that he wants a possible fight with unbeaten British fighter Kevin Mitchell to take place in Australia. Katsidis has not fought in Australia in four years. The WBO gave both camps until mid-March to reach a deal but Smith wants the fight to head to a purse bid because he doesn't think a deal will be reached where Mitchell will end up in Australia. It'll likely be in Melbourne because of the large Greek population - Melbourne has the world's second largest Greek population behind Athens - but maybe it'll happen in QLD. Likely Melbourne though.
So what happened with the Juan Diaz fight?Comment

how popular is Katsidis?
I'm pretty sure Mitchell can sell 20,000 tickets or thereabouts with a good undercard at the o2 in London. But, if Katsidis can match that I see no reason why it shouldn't be in Australia.
This fight will be epic. Honestly, might be the best fight we see for the next few years.Comment

It's a bit criminal in my opinion, but Katsidis is nowhere near as famous as fighters like Anthony Mundine or Danny Green. He's very popular among boxing people locally, but not well-known in the mainstream. I don't know if Mitchell could draw 20,000, but Katsidis certainly couldn't on his name alone. He'd probaby get half that number down in Melbourne at the tennis centre.
Hope it happens, because the fight scene here is looking pretty terrible.Comment
