hopkins is a scaled down lightheavy and much bigger than echols it shows here...echols didn't have enough weight behind his punches to hurt a much bigger fighter...

Watching that clip again is just fascinating. Both of those guys - right then - were very good fighters, damn near great. Not far off from what they would become. There's an interesting part where I think Lampley asks Clancy if Hopkins has a very good chin or does Jones not have as much power as advertised. And Clancy responds by saying that Jones hasn't been able to land too many clean punches. Even then, Bernard was excellent defensively. And he hit Jones a lot more than I saw Jones hit again for many years. Jones was obviously more seasoned and used that to his advantage through the tough latter rounds. It's also clear he's favoring his left a lot in that fight. It's kind of disappointing this didn't go down in 2002 but I think this fight, over the years, will become more and more intriguing.
