Akron Ohio's second-most popular athlete these days -- next to someone they call LbJ -- undefeated jr. middleweight rising star Shawn Porter (12-0-0 10KOs) gets his first title shot tomorrow on ESPN's Friday Night Fights against Russell Jordan at the Wolstein Center in Cleveland, Ohio.
It's a known fact that the young Porter has become a favorite sparring partner for boxing's best fighter Manny Pacquiao after serving as his chief spar mate fro Miguel Cotto and weeks of working with him in Baguio City, Philippines.
As a token of the Pac Man's appreciation and a sign of his support, Pacquiao gave Porter a parting gift when the 22-year old Akron native stopped by the Wild Card Gym last Monday to bid Freddie Roach and his friends goodbye.
The gift was something Porter did not expect but gladly accepted: It was Pacquiao's training shoes he had been using while preparing for his bout with Joshua Clottey.
Porter will be proudly wearing the stylish red Nike boots that dons the name of the former owner in bold yellow letters in hopes to attain similar success the person the exclusive shoes were tailored for. On the line is the WBO NABO light middleweight crown and with the help of his father and trainer Kenny Porter, who actually looks more like a bigger brother, Shawn looks primed to become a champ.
And what better people to learn from than the best in the business? Porter not only gets to enjoy the fruits of being able to go toe-to-toe with the best fighter in the world in Manny Pacquiao and get tips from the best boxing trainer of this era in Freddie Roach, his chemistry with his dad and trainer Kenny is definitely remarkable. With the military background and boxing knowledge of his father, Shawn benefits from someone who he can trust and also instills disciplines and skills he needs for him to become a champion.
When asked by Maxboxing's Steve Kim if Pacquiao is the best boxer he’s moved around with, he answered, "Most definitely. I’ve sparred with Kelly Pavlik, Andre Dirrell; they’re great. But Manny is just on a whole ’nother level and he brings an excitement into the sparring that is bar none."
