Roy Jones Jr's weekly blog column

“Those who LIVE, are those who FIGHT.” -Victor Hugo

THAT right there is about as simple as you can put it. And that applies to anybody, any age, no matter what they may be up against in life. I am a fighter. That’s what I do. I’m Roy Jones, Jr. and this is my first blog. 8CN is hosting me every week leading up to my rematch with Hopkins so you can understand this game from my perspective. I want to thank boxing fans around the world for tuning in right here to follow me through this. Sometimes I may write, some days I may call in from camp and just talk about what’s going on, so you can see boxing from the inside out. NOW. I gotta lil something to say.

People ask, “Why are you fighting Bernard now, it’s too late!” “Why are you fighting at all?” Some say “Champ you ain’t got nothing to prove,” and some say “He ain’t proved nothing.” Well, ONE, this is not about a timeline, things happen when they’re meant to happen, and Roy Jones, Jr. fights when it’s time to fight. This thing’s been brewing for a lonnng time. HEAR me. I know he fears me. For a fact! He’s also jealous of me and is trying to kick me when he “thinks” I’m down. But I’m sorry. Joke’s on HIM.

I said, “when he “thinks” I’m down,” because he thinks I’ve lost my touch. (Good, let him think it.) And I’m about sick of hearing him go on about the basics. Like I don’t know the basics? I’ve been boxing since I was a little boy, you think I got in there and started flying around and knocking people out with crazy punches at age 10? NO! I learned it like everybody else, then developed my own style and made my own name. He has worked those basics his whole career, and made HIS name. That’s fine. When we first fought my style obviously out shined his, he felt every punch and still has nightmares about it. Had we fought again right away? The same outcome. Same damn thing. THIS is the time to see which man, with his OWN style, can dominate. Now IS the right time. It’s PERFECT, to tell you the truth.

Most fighters and the fans know this one, that old Japanese saying about warriors: “Fall down seven times, stand up eight.” Well, Bernard and I have had our wins, and our losses. We have both stood back up. And here I AM, telling you here WE are. This is going down, for me and for Bernard. The fans are going to love it bc when a jealously like HIS grows for so many years and there’s something that’s got to be settled? You settle it. This is Roy Jones, Jr. I’ve broken faces and I’ve broken boxing records. I get back up. That’s what I DO. And there’s ya answer.

This is the truth. Some people have problems understanding this. You learn the basics when you start out. When you done that then you will try where you can go from there.

Jones would of never gotten as far as he did if he didn't know the basics. So I definitely agree with him and with the people that posted above me.

True. Especially in his amateur fights you can see him utilize technically skilled orthodox boxing.

this is all true HOWEVER, the style he developed does

not suit a 40 year old body, he should at least try to back

to the basics (he would still be a better boxer than bernard, given he still

has a good amount of athleticism)

I agree Roy has slowed down big time after making the jump to HW back to LHW. Many fighters know his blue print now since Tarver and Johnson kind of exposed him. You can see just from his most recent fight with Green that he was trying to hit Jones in similar fashion to the side of the head. You would think Jones would adapt his style a bit now that people know his tricks now. I thought Roy fought well against Tito by keeping his hands up (ala Winky Wright style) and he did mix it up a lot more using a jab. He should have fought Green that way and if he wants to have a serious chance against Hopkins heeds to fight in a similar fashion.
