Kevin Mitchell, now 30-0 (22 early), 135lbs, retained the WBO Inter-Continental title he won in December when defeating Columbian Breidis Prescott by stopping another Columbian, Ignacio Mendoza, 27-5-2 (18 early), 135lbs, and who fights out of Spain, in two rounds last Saturday night. Very nice performance by both.
That right hand by Mitchell, followed by that wicked uppercut that lifted Mendoza of the ground was Pac-Cotto round 4 all over again. Amazing stuff. -

Boxing trainers and football coaches in britain need to focus more on the technical aspects of their sport in my opinion. It seems somewhat anachronistic as it is.Comment

we're all entitled to our opinions of course.
if you bear in mind, for example, britain is barely the size of an average american state, we don't actually do to badly regarding boxing prowess.Comment

Mitchell is ready for the World stage and excluding Marquez and Valero, I believe he can beat anyone out there at lightweight. His technical skills have vastly improved recently and he seems to have matured as a fighter, showing a decent tactical brain. The credit has to go to Jimmy Tibbs of course. Mitchell has everything going for him. Physically he's a little small at lightweight, but he has everything else; power, reflexes, handspeed and chin. Technically he's underrated by a few people who remember his slugger style from earlier fights. His defence is much improved and he has every shot in the book. We know that he has matured mentally from the evidence of the Prescott fight, we know he can finish an opponent, we know that he has the heart for a war and we know that he has plenty of experience for a prospect, but what we don't know is how he reacts when things aren't going to plan - can he adapt? It's sink or swim time anyway and I'm backing him for big things.
Cleverly has a little way to go yet, but you have to be impressed by his performances of late for the most part. It's becoming clear that while Enzo Calzaghe could motivate a fighter and get him in great shape, he wasn't teaching good technique. Under Enzo it looked like Cleverly was feather-fisted and while he isn't a huge hitter, we've seen that he can certainly command respect with his punches from the last five fights. He is sitting down on his punches much better now. As has been already noted, his defence sometimes leaves something to be desired, but his offence has a nice variety to it and athletically there aren't many better in the division. If I were Warren, I'd try and put a three fight plan in place, with Cleverly getting at least two fights against experienced World-level fighters before he tries for a belt. Provided he stays away from Dawson and Pascal (at least for the time being), I believe he'll be a belt holder within the the next year or so.Comment

Kevin is ready to fight for the world champs, Nathan must have to choice a right opponent for the world belts. Both of them will be a great champs very soon.Kevin Mitchell, now 30-0 (22 early), 135lbs, retained the WBO Inter-Continental title he won in December when defeating Columbian Breidis Prescott by stopping another Columbian, Ignacio Mendoza, 27-5-2 (18 early), 135lbs, and who fights out of Spain, in two rounds last Saturday night.
