  • Lonsdale signs USS Cunningham

for the boxing fans who are interested in more than just Mayweather and Pacquiao!!!

Lonsdale, the world’s leading manufacturer and marketer of premier boxing equipment and sports fashion, today announced the signing of cruiserweight boxer Steve “USS” Cunningham to a multi-year endorsement deal. Under the agreement, Cunningham will be featured in Lonsdale’s multi-platform marketing campaign as 100 years of greatness meets American fight sports and will exclusively wear Lonsdale footwear, apparel and gloves (available at www.lonsdaleusa.com) for all professional fights and Lonsdale sponsored events, starting with his IBF Cruiserweight title fight against Matt Godfrey on March 19th at the BankAtlantic Center in Sunrise, FL.

“In addition to being a world class boxer, Steve Cunningham is a world class human being who dedicates himself 100% to every aspect of his life. His passion and dedication to be the best is a natural fit with the brand and reflects Lonsdale’s 100 year heritage of authenticity and producing the highest quality equipment,” said Neil Morton, head of Lonsdale USA. “We take great pride in having Steve “USS” Cunningham join the Lonsdale team and believe his rare combination of skill and character will be a tremendous asset in introducing the Lonsdale brand to a wider U.S. consumer base.”

Born and raised in Philadelphia, Cunningham began boxing when he joined the Navy after high school in 1994 and tried out for the All-Navy Boxing Team. In his first amateur fight, Cunningham defeated the reigning All-Navy Light Heavyweight Champion. A natural boxer, Cunningham rose quickly in the amateur ranks and became a 1998 Golden Gloves Champion before turning pro in 2000 where he has earned an impressive 22 wins against 2 losses, with 11 wins by way of knockout.

With well over a century of European history, pride and tradition, Lonsdale is the most sought after name in the industry with origins going back to Hugh Lowther, the 5th Earl of Lonsdale who organized the first match using boxing gloves in 1891. Long known for quality craftsmanship, premium materials and technological advances, the Lonsdale brand is celebrated among the proud pugilists, coaches and fans involved in the gentleman’s sport.

Steve Cunningham joins an elite list of superstars who have donned the Lonsdale logo, Lennox Lewis, Ricky Hatton, Marvin Hagler and Sugar Ray Robinson to name a few. Though it may be new on U.S. shores, the Lonsdale brand has made an immediate impact on the American boxing community and firmly cemented itself as the premier brand in boxing.

Be sure to join Lonsdale on Facebook (

Good that a cruiser gets recognition, it's such an overlooked weight class. Do you guys reckon that Cunningham will eventually move up as Haye and Adamek did?

If he can, there's so much more money to be made at HW, although with the likes of Haye, Adamek and Johnathan Banks already having moved up it might be a lot harder to make. There's some good potential match-ups between those (Haye v. Adamek PLEASE!!) among themselves, let alone with the Klitschkos, Povetkin, etc.

With the Cruiserweights moving up weight, I think the Heavyweight will be exciting once again. That's if they move up in shape.
